Cedar Siding Installed To Let The Grain Do The Talking

Cedar has stayed a favorite among Ranchos De Taos, NM homeowners who want a natural material that fights off rot and insect damage on its own, built right into the wood. That said, natural resistance is not a license to install it carelessly. Grain pattern, board orientation, and how tightly each piece is fastened all shape how the wood ages and how long the finish lasts. Our crew chooses and orients each board with intention instead of grabbing whatever comes off the top of the stack.

The finish is really where cedar siding earns its reputation, or loses it. A good stain or clear coat applied to clean, properly dried cedar soaks into the wood and shields it from UV graying and moisture. Apply that same finish over dust or mill glaze, though, and it peels early, leaving the wood unprotected. We prep every surface before finishing and back-prime boards the way wood siding should always be handled, sealing all six sides before a single board goes up.

Cedar siding around Ranchos De Taos, NM does best with a little breathing room behind the boards — a rain screen gap that lets any trapped moisture dry out instead of sitting against the wall. That single detail can meaningfully extend the life of both the cedar and the wall assembly behind it. With #YEARS years spent installing and finishing cedar throughout the region, we treat the grain and the finish as equally important, since cutting corners on either one strips away exactly what made cedar worth choosing in the first place.
